A 34-year-old man arrested on suspicion of felony domestic assault has died after being found unresponsive in a cell at the Stearns County Jail in St Cloud, Minnesota.
Isiah Oluwasheun Ero-Phillips was discovered during routine welfare checks at about 3.49am on 12 September, less than 24 hours after he was booked into the jail.
Correctional officers began life-saving treatment before Mayo Ambulance and St Cloud Fire and Rescue crews arrived. Despite their efforts, ambulance staff pronounced Mr Ero-Phillips dead at the scene.
Investigation into Stearns County Jail death
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s Force Unit has taken over the investigation. Authorities said the involvement of the state agency was routine in cases of this nature.
Initial observations found no obvious signs of trauma, according to information reported by local media. Mr Ero-Phillips’s body was taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, with the cause of death yet to be established.
Mr Ero-Phillips had been arrested by St Cloud Police Department at about 9.05am on 11 September on suspicion of felony domestic assault. Authorities said he was heavily intoxicated when he was admitted to the Stearns County Jail.
The investigation remains ongoing. Officials have released no further details about the circumstances of his death, although his family has been notified.
