Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to open formal talks with Crystal Palace over a January move for midfielder Adam Wharton, with Chelsea also monitoring the England international.
Wharton has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded young midfielders since joining Palace and is viewed as a player likely to attract a move to a bigger club.
Spanish publication Fichajes claims Real Madrid have stepped up their interest and could seek an agreement during the winter transfer window. The report suggests Palace could demand as much as €100 million for the 22-year-old.
Real Madrid and Chelsea compete for Adam Wharton
Chelsea have long been linked with Wharton as they search for a midfielder with his profile. Their interest is understood to have intensified after Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City on the final day of the summer transfer window, leaving no time to secure a replacement.
Wharton is considered a potential fit for the project at Stamford Bridge, while Chelsea could offer him the chance to remain in London and develop into an important part of the team.
Real Madrid, however, would provide the prospect of Champions League football and an opportunity to compete for major silverware. The Spanish giants were also reported to have pursued high-profile midfield targets such as Rodri during the summer before missing out.
Palace may prefer to sell Wharton to a club abroad, although any decision could depend on whether Real Madrid or Chelsea are prepared to meet the midfielder’s reported valuation.
