San Anselmo town councillors in California considered whether to introduce a ban on all tobacco products at a meeting on Tuesday, with four possible courses of action put forward, including leaving the existing rules unchanged.
The discussion took place at the Town Council Chambers on San Anselmo Avenue on October 13, as officials examined how far the town should go in restricting tobacco sales.
The proposals range from taking no further action to adopting tighter controls that could ultimately prevent tobacco products from being sold in the town. No final decision was reported.
San Anselmo already requires retailers selling tobacco to hold a local licence. In July, the council also considered an emergency measure to pause new tobacco retailer licences while permanent regulations were studied.
The issue comes as other communities in Marin County weigh similar restrictions on tobacco and nicotine products. Nearby Corte Madera voted in September to end the sale of tobacco and nicotine products by local businesses.
Tuesday’s meeting was posted online by the town and ran from 7pm to 10pm local time.
