Senior ministers, Bank of England officials and other key figures gathered in Whitehall on Monday for an emergency Cobra meeting focused on the potential economic consequences of the ongoing conflict in Iran as the Prime Minister sought to reassure the public that the government was taking action on household finances.
Cobra, formally known as the Cabinet Office Briefing Room A, is the government’s principal crisis coordination mechanism, convening senior officials in response to major national or international emergencies. Monday’s session was called specifically to examine how the situation in Iran could affect British families and the wider economy.
Keir Starmer, speaking to reporters ahead of the meeting, said he had asked officials to put every available government tool on the table when it came to addressing cost of living pressures linked to the conflict. The Bank of England was among the institutions represented at the session, which Starmer framed as part of a broader effort to ensure the government was doing all it could to limit the financial impact on ordinary households.
Separately, the Prime Minister moved to address growing public concern about whether Britain itself faced any direct military threat from Iran. The Israel Defense Forces had claimed at the weekend that Iran now possessed missiles capable of reaching London, Paris and Berlin — a claim shared publicly on social media. Iran also reportedly launched ballistic missiles at the Diego Garcia military base, a joint US-UK facility located roughly 2,350 miles from Iran’s southern coastline.
Starmer said the government conducts security assessments continuously and that there was currently no indication the UK was being targeted. He also stressed the importance of pursuing de-escalation while defending British interests, describing the challenge as acting decisively “without getting dragged into the war.”
Further updates from the Cobra meeting are expected as the situation continues to develop.
