Donald Trump has pardoned golf caddie Eric Larson over a drug-dealing conviction, allowing him to travel to the UK for PGA tournaments including next year’s Scottish Open and British Open.
Larson, who served 11 years in prison for the conviction from three decades ago, was unable to attend last year’s British Open after his application for UK authorisation was denied because of his criminal record.
He caddies for PGA golfer Harris English, who finished runner-up at the tournament and collected $1.8 million. Caddies typically receive a seven per cent commission, meaning Larson missed out on a significant payday.
English welcomed the presidential pardon, saying it would enable Larson to travel and work alongside him at the two Scottish tournaments.
“I’m just so pumped for Eric that he can have his rights back … and travel to be by my side and work for me specifically at the Scottish Open and the British Open,” English said.
He added: “He knows what it’s like to have your freedom taken away. He just brings so much joy.”
