President Trump has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as US ambassador to Greece following allegations surrounding a $100,000 American Express bill, the White House has said.
Katie Zacharia, the president’s new White House press secretary, told reporters on Tuesday that Mr Trump had asked Ms Guilfoyle to leave her post. She said the White House wished Ms Guilfoyle well.
It remains unclear whether Ms Guilfoyle has formally submitted her resignation. The development comes a day after Mr Trump said he was “looking at” firing her.
The request follows a report alleging that Ms Guilfoyle asked Trump donor Eric Deters to pay her American Express bill in exchange for access to Trump officials.
Mr Deters has said Ms Guilfoyle promised to be his “ride or die in Trump world” if he provided the money. He also alleged that he had already paid her for access to Trump but that she had not delivered.
