Cole Palmer’s latest injury withdrawal from England duty has frustrated manager Thomas Tuchel, who believes the Chelsea forward is missing valuable opportunities to establish himself with the national team.
Palmer, 24, had made an impressive start to the campaign, scoring four goals in seven appearances for Chelsea. However, a recurring muscular problem has disrupted his progress and forced him to pull out of England’s Nations League squad.
Thomas Tuchel frustrated by Cole Palmer injury
Tuchel said Palmer’s repeated absences were preventing him from making the impression required to secure a regular starting place for England, although he stressed that the player was not being blamed for the situation.
“For sure it’s a missed opportunity [for Palmer]. It’s another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities, and I don’t blame him for it. It’s just the fact,” Tuchel said.
“He misses way too many camps with injuries and I only want to rely on what I personally witness and what I see within my team, and for that you have to be in camp.”
The England manager added: “If you’re not in camp, there’s a next level to impress that you cannot achieve because you only can do it when you’re actually with me on the pitch and with us on the pitch so, yeah, it is a missed opportunity.”
Tuchel said his understanding was that Palmer had been playing through discomfort and pain before withdrawing from the squad, after being informed by the player and Chelsea.
“My understanding is that he plays with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete on the highest level with discomfort and pain, so he withdrew and informed us and Chelsea informed us,” he said.
Despite the setback with England, Chelsea remain confident that Palmer will regain full fitness and play a leading role in their domestic campaign.
Palmer’s club future has also been the subject of speculation, with Manchester United linked with a possible move. However, transfer reporter Dean Jones said sources had indicated that the player remained focused on Chelsea and committed to England.
Jones reported that Palmer was determined to establish himself as a key figure in the national team ahead of Euro 2028, while remaining fully focused on Chelsea despite claims that he could be unsettled in London or favour a return to the north.
He added that Palmer was determined to prove himself for both club and country, but needed to remain fit enough to demonstrate his ability consistently.
