Two people were killed in a shooting at a strip-mall party near California State University, Northridge, in Los Angeles, as police searched for a suspect on Saturday.
The gunfire broke out at about 11.05pm on Friday, October 2, in the 18,000 block of Nordhoff Street near Reseda Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
Officers had been called to the second-floor Artist Lounge after reports of a loud private party. Police told organisers to end the gathering before hearing several gunshots and seeing people flee, CBS Los Angeles reported.
Two victims were found suffering from gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. They were described as a man and a woman aged between 18 and 25.
Dozens of teenagers were present at the party, which police said had been advertised on social media. Video from the scene showed officers evacuating attendees and detaining several minors, while part of the complex was sealed off.
The LAPD has not released the victims’ identities or established a motive. Police were also checking whether there had been another victim, but no further details about possible injuries were immediately available.
One suspect is being sought and no arrests have been announced. Detectives are examining evidence, reviewing security footage from nearby businesses and speaking to people who attended the party.
The shooting took place close to, but not on, the California State University, Northridge campus. It remained unclear whether the attack happened inside the lounge, in another business or in a shared area of the strip-mall complex.
