A rapid-response survey led by Crystal Hammond of the University of California, Riverside, and Adriana Bankston of the STEM Advocacy Institute has highlighted how sudden US federal science funding cuts in early 2025 are destabilising the careers of early‑career researchers and prompting many to consider moving abroad. The study, published in Frontiers in Sociology, flags immediate hurdles for young scientists and warns of potential long‑term damage to the country’s scientific workforce.
In the first months of 2025, the Trump administration implemented swift policy shifts across the academic landscape. Federal science budgets were slated for double‑digit reductions, hundreds of existing grants were frozen or terminated, and some diversity and climate programmes were paused. Basic scientific research, largely conducted at universities, depends heavily on federal grants allocated by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
The disruption has hit the most vulnerable researchers—the early‑career cohort consisting of undergraduate students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers whose livelihoods depend directly on grant funding. A 2024 PsyPost study cited in the report noted that many graduate students already faced financial strain as stipends failed to cover basic living costs.
As universities responded to the funding shocks, experts warned of longer‑term consequences for the training pipeline. A 2026 computer‑modelling study cited in the report suggested that abrupt cuts to federal health research funding create training setbacks that can take decades to overcome. In the immediate aftermath of the 2025 cuts, universities across the country began shrinking graduate student admissions.
The rapid‑response survey collected online data during May and June 2025, while the funding changes were still unfolding. Two questionnaires were used: a brief qualitative tool gathering personal stories and advocacy actions from six participants, and a longer quantitative survey with open responses from 30 early‑career researchers. Participants were reached via academic mailing lists, social media and direct outreach to university contacts.
In the quantitative component, 60 per cent of respondents were doctoral students, 13.3 per cent undergraduate students, and 13.3 per cent postdoctoral researchers. Most worked in the life sciences at large, public research universities, and the majority relied on federal funding, with about 63 per cent funded by the National Institutes of Health and 20 per cent by the National Science Foundation.
The findings point to widespread professional distress. Half of participants rated the impact of the funding cuts as severe, scoring the disruption eight out of ten or higher. A further 40 per cent described the impact as moderate, while 20 per cent reported stipends or benefits being cut or delayed and 10 per cent noted hiring freezes or rescinded job offers.
Looking ahead, there was broad anxiety about scientific careers. About 90 per cent feared negative long‑term job prospects in research, and 56.7 per cent believed they would not be able to complete their current projects. Overall, 60 per cent said they were considering leaving the United States to pursue their scientific goals elsewhere.
Beyond professional concerns, the survey indicated adverse effects on well‑being. Roughly three‑quarters reported negative impacts on mental health and wellness, and 56.7 per cent said disruptions harmed their sense of belonging in the sciences. A similar proportion contemplated leaving academic research entirely.
The qualitative responses added depth to the statistics. Graduate students described how cancelled grants delayed dissertations, risking funding exhaustion before degree completion. Postdoctoral researchers recalled the termination of fellowships aimed at increasing diversity in the sciences. Participants described engaging in advocacy, including campus rallies, correspondence with elected representatives and public education efforts about the importance of scientific research.
The study aligns with earlier PsyPost reporting from 2020, which examined perceptions of political interference and scientific integrity among federal agency scientists. In that instance, researchers noted disruption within federal science agencies under the Trump administration, though the focus differed from the current emphasis on funding viability for university trainees.
As with most research, there are caveats. The sample size was small—30 participants completed the quantitative questionnaire—and the rapid‑response format with a short data collection window means the results are not a nationally representative sample. The use of convenience sampling raises the possibility that those most affected by the budget cuts were more motivated to participate. The demographic profile was also relatively narrow, with a majority of respondents being White scholars in the life sciences at research‑intensive institutions. The authors emphasise that effects could differ for scholars in the humanities or social sciences or at smaller colleges, and call for larger, more diverse follow‑ups to understand the broader impact on higher education.
