JD Vance has said anyone found to be “selling access to the White House” should face consequences, as the US vice-president addressed allegations surrounding the Trump administration during a town hall in Michigan.
Speaking to CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil, Mr Vance said such conduct would be “disgusting and despicable”. He added that any judgement should be based on facts rather than “a random news media report that I read”.
The comments came after Mr Dokoupil referred to reports including Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency earnings and the removal of Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece.
Ms Guilfoyle has faced allegations that she asked a man seeking help from the Trump administration to wire her $100,000. She has denied wrongdoing, while Mr Trump has denied any conflicts of interest.
Democrats in Congress have pledged to investigate the Trump administration if they regain control of the House or Senate in the midterm elections. Such a victory would give them control of committees and the power to issue subpoenas to administration officials.
Asked whether the administration would comply with subpoenas, Mr Vance replied: “Of course I will. Look, I mean, we follow the law.”
The one-hour town hall is due to air on Saturday evening, less than three weeks before the midterm elections.
