Victoria’s crime rate has fallen for the first time in four years, despite a sharp rise in shoplifting and breaches of bail, according to recently released statistics.
The figures emerge as the Victorian Government pledges to take a tougher approach to crime, highlighting a mixed picture across the state’s latest crime data.
While the overall crime rate declined, shoplifting increased sharply. Breaches of bail also rose during the period covered by the statistics.
