Anthony Albanese has been honoured for strengthening alliances and security in the Indo-Pacific at the Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Awards in New York.
The Australian prime minister accepted the award at a black-tie ceremony held alongside the United Nations General Assembly, attended by more than 800 guests.
“It’s not been unnoticed in Australia that an Australian is getting an Atlantic Council award, given we front the Pacific, the Indian, the Coral Sea and the Southern Ocean but not the Atlantic,” Mr Albanese told the gathering.
“I accept it with humility on behalf of Australia, because it is the honour of my life to serve Australians.”
Papua New Guinea’s prime minister, James Marape, introduced Mr Albanese to the stage as a “fair dinkum Aussie” and a close friend. He recalled the pair’s walk along the Kokoda Trail, which he said had strengthened ties between the two countries.
Former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd was among those seated at Mr Albanese’s table, alongside former US Treasury secretary Henry Paulson and Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla.
Atlantic Council awards bring together political and cultural figures
The ceremony also brought Hollywood and sporting figures into the diplomatic gathering. Keanu Reeves introduced Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali, who was also presented with an award.
Reeves, a motor racing fan, imitated the sound of a Formula One car during his speech.
Cynthia Erivo, the Oscar-nominated actress and star of Wicked, was recognised for her artistic achievements and human rights work. The Tony Award winner did not perform, but spoke about the influence of music and acting.
“Artists are often told that we are not saving the world or saving a life,” she said. “What I’ve really grown to understand is that art can be a lifesaver.”
Alexander Stubb of Finland was also honoured for his work strengthening Nato during a period of global tensions. “I know that America right now is a hot country, as President Trump says. I can tell you that Finland is even cooler,” he said.
