Three people have been arrested over the fatal shooting of 22-year-old plumber Daniel Hussein at a sporting reserve in Melbourne’s north.
Homicide detectives detained two men, aged 19 and 20, and a 19-year-old woman in Deer Park at about 5.50pm on Wednesday, three days after Mr Hussein was shot at HR Uren Reserve in Thomastown.
Victoria Police said the trio, from Donnybrook and Lalor, were being interviewed by detectives. No charges had been laid.
Mr Hussein was attacked shortly after 7.30pm on Sunday after what police believe may have been a confrontation in the reserve’s car park. Emergency services treated him at the scene, but he died shortly afterwards.
His brother, Ali Hussein, said Daniel had gone to the reserve after a friend became involved in a fight.
“His friend got into a brawl and called my brother,” he said. “My brother pulled up in his car and they shot my brother. His car was still running.”
Ali also alleged that a dispute in Melbourne’s central business district the previous night had led to the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the claim have not been confirmed by police.
Daniel had recently completed his plumbing apprenticeship, bought a house and was weeks away from getting married.
His brother described him as a sensible young man who was committed to work, fitness and building a future.
“He’d come home from work and go straight to the gym – he was into his fitness,” Ali told The Age.
Friends remembered Mr Hussein as a warm and generous person. One said he had been “a beautiful soul” whose smile could light up a room.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from Victoria Drive and the surrounding Thomastown area before or after the shooting.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
