A petrol station near Lambeau Field has become an unlikely destination for fans seeking Amish-style fried pies, with Yoder’s Fry Pies delivered each Monday to Jaguar Shell in Ashwaubenon, Green Bay.
The sweet treats were discovered by FOX6 Sports Director Tim Van Vooren and sports photojournalist Mickie Leach during their regular journeys from the station’s Brown Deer studios to cover the Green Bay Packers.
The pair have been making the trip north since September 16, 1990, reporting from games, drafts, training camps and practices. Their latest feature, You, Me & I-43, looks at unusual stops and local finds along the route.
Yoder’s Fry Pies at Jaguar Shell
Inside the Jaguar Shell station, at 2300 S Ridge Road, the pies sit among the more familiar petrol-station offerings. Yoder’s produces a range of varieties, including apple, cherry, blueberry, peach, lemon and raspberry, as well as strawberry rhubarb.
The pies are made with a filled pastry shell before being deep-fried and glazed. Their arrival has turned a routine stop on the road to Green Bay into a destination for customers looking for a hand-held dessert.
Annette Goza, a cashier at Jaguar Shell, described the process behind the pastries.
“They put the dough in this hopper, the hopper will sort out portion sizes. They’ll put them in another machine that’s hand cranked, and they flatten them, and then they take these flattened pie crusts over to a station,” she said.
“They’ll put the filling, the fruit or the chocolate, and then they hand crank them, they crimp them so they are all uniform. And then they’ll take them over to a fryer and they deep-fry them, which makes them even better, if you can imagine. And then the icing is pumped up, and then glazed.”
Yoder’s Fry Pies are made in the Amish tradition in Bonduel, Wisconsin, before being taken to the Ashwaubenon station each Monday. The stop offers Packers travellers a taste of local baking just a short distance from Lambeau Field.
