Thirty-four people have been arrested after a fatal shooting in the Dutch village of Overasselt, during which two police officers were also injured.
Police were called to a property on the Ewijkseweg at about 4am on Tuesday after reports of suspicious activity. Officers said a large group of people wearing balaclavas had been seen near the house.
When the first police unit arrived, shots were fired at the officers. A seriously injured man was found at the scene but died despite medical treatment.
The victim was identified by police as a 51-year-old man from nearby Wijchen. The two injured officers were taken to hospital and are said to be out of danger.
The arrests were made at several locations in and around Overasselt, with specialist police units, including arrest teams from the Dutch Special Interventions Service, involved in the operation.
Police operations were also carried out on the A73, near the provincial border with Limburg, on the A76 near Maastricht, in a maize field close to the Ewijkseweg and at Nijmegen railway station. Warning shots were fired during some of the arrests.
Several weapons, vehicles and electronic data carriers have been seized as part of the investigation. The suspects include people from the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Algeria, according to police and prosecutors.
All 34 suspects are being held under restrictions that allow them to speak only to their lawyers while they are questioned. Police said further arrests had not been ruled out and that the motive for the shooting, along with the precise roles of those detained, was still being investigated.
Residents in Overasselt and neighbouring Nederasselt were urged to remain indoors while officers continued searching the area. Police are also appealing for witnesses and anyone with relevant CCTV or other footage to come forward.
