Former BBC Actor John Alford Dies In Prison After Being Jailed For Child Sex Offences

John Alford, the former television actor known for his roles in London’s Burning and Grange Hill, has died in prison, weeks after being sentenced for sexually abusing two young girls.
A Prison Service spokesman confirmed that Alford, whose real name was John Shannon, died on 13 March 2026. He was 54 years old.
According to a source who spoke to The Sun on Sunday, staff discovered Alford unresponsive on his bed when they opened his cell door on Friday.
Alford had been jailed following a conviction for the sexual abuse of two girls, aged 14 and 15, in Hertfordshire. The offences were first reported to police in April 2022.
The actor rose to prominence through roles in BBC productions during the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in the school drama Grange Hill before going on to play firefighter Billy Ray in London’s Burning. His acting career had already collapsed years earlier following a separate legal matter.
The Prison Service confirmed that, as is standard procedure for all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
