A Jewish school in Amsterdam has been struck by an explosion in what the city’s mayor has described as a deliberate and targeted attack on the Jewish community.
The blast struck a religious school in an upscale residential neighbourhood on the city’s south side. Dutch media reported the incident as a purposeful act, and Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema confirmed she believed it to be a targeted attack. It remains unclear whether anyone was injured.
Ms Halsema condemned the incident, describing it as a cowardly act of aggression and stating that Jewish residents of Amsterdam face a growing pattern of antisemitic incidents that she called wholly unacceptable.
Police are examining footage which appears to capture a suspect in the act of setting off the explosive device, and an investigation is underway.
The Amsterdam school attack is the second incident to strike the Dutch Jewish community within a matter of days. A synagogue in central Rotterdam was damaged earlier in the week following an overnight arson attack, which prompted authorities to heighten security at synagogues and Jewish institutions across the Netherlands.
The incidents form part of a broader pattern extending beyond Dutch borders. On Monday, a synagogue in Liège, Belgium, was also struck by fire following an explosion there.
Authorities have not yet publicly named any suspects or disclosed a motive in connection with any of the incidents.
