Amazon is increasing the price of its Prime subscription for customers in Australia, with the annual fee rising from 79 Australian dollars to $99.
Members were told of the change by email on Wednesday. The new charge will apply from their first renewal date on or after 25 November.
Amazon said the increase would help it “continue supporting” the services included in Prime, adding that the range of products and benefits available to members had continued to grow.
The company said the subscription’s services would otherwise remain unchanged. Members will continue to receive free delivery, including same-day delivery on eligible orders, as well as access to Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime, Prime Reading and games through Amazon Luna.
Prime members will also retain access to events including Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, Amazon said.
Amazon Prime price increase follows ACCC court action
The price increase follows legal action brought by Australia’s competition regulator, the ACCC, in June over alleged unfair contract terms affecting Prime Video customers.
The regulator alleges contracts covering more than one million Prime subscribers contained five unfair terms. It claims Amazon relied on one or more of them when it introduced advertisements to Prime Video in July 2024, after the service had been “almost entirely ad-free”.
Amazon has also recently announced major job cuts. Senior vice president Beth Galetti said in January that about 16,000 roles would be eliminated worldwide, following a reduction of 14,000 jobs announced three months earlier.
