A 30-year-old man has been arrested after a domestic violence call in Sierra Vista, Arizona, escalated into a SWAT standoff when police rescued an injured woman from an apartment.
John Lopez is facing charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault and kidnapping following the incident in the 90 block of Kings Way on Saturday, 29 August.
Sierra Vista Police Department said a neighbour called 911 at about 7.45am after hearing screams from inside the property. Officers heard the cries when they arrived and made contact with a female occupant before bringing her to safety. She was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment. Police said a male occupant then barricaded himself inside the apartment and refused orders to come out. Officers secured the area and brought in negotiators and the Cochise County Regional SWAT Team.
Less-lethal tactics were used to end the stand-off, allowing officers to take Lopez into custody. He suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was medically cleared before being taken to Cochise County Jail. Lopez was booked on charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, kidnapping, preventing the use of 911 in an emergency, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
