The University of Arizona has reportedly suspended activities at six fraternities while allegations of misconduct by their members are investigated.
Chrissy Lieberman, the university’s dean of students, is said to have written to the chapters outlining multiple alleged violations. The six fraternities are Zeta Beta Tau, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Theta Xi and Phi Gamma Delta.
One incident described in the letter allegedly involved new members being “forced to consume large quantities of alcohol and live goldfish”.
Lieberman also alleged that the fraternities had breached university policies through hazing, creating an unsafe environment and, in one instance, assaulting a student.
Chapter advisers are reportedly required to meet the dean for a mandatory discussion about the alleged activities.
The suspensions prevent the fraternities from “hosting, attending, participating in, and sponsoring any organizational activities”. They may, however, continue to hold club business meetings during the suspension period.
The action follows the Cornell 7 case, in which a former Cornell University student claimed in a lawsuit that multiple fraternity members had given her ketamine and gang-raped her.
