An armed suspect died after shooting himself during a Dallas Police Department warrant operation at a motel on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Officers from the department’s Crime Response Team went to the Mustang Inn in the 400 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway, near Interstate 35E, at about 12.21pm.
Police said the man, who was in his mid-30s, was wanted on multiple felony warrants involving narcotics and a probation violation. Officers used Flock licence-plate recognition technology to help locate him at the motel.
When officers approached, the suspect was armed with a long rifle, according to police. One officer fired towards him, but it was not immediately clear whether the shot struck the man.
The suspect remained armed despite repeated commands to surrender before producing another weapon and shooting himself, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured. It was not immediately known whether the suspect had fired at police during the confrontation.
The Dallas Police Department said the investigation remained ongoing and that body-worn camera footage and further information would be released within 72 hours.
