Arsenal and Manchester United are maintaining their interest in Sporting CP defender Maxi Araújo, but neither club is currently planning an immediate move for the Uruguay international.
Reports of possible offers worth €65 million have not been followed by any significant developments. The Premier League clubs are understood to be continuing to monitor the 26-year-old’s situation, with their transfer plans unchanged for now.
Arsenal and Manchester United continue to monitor Araújo
Araújo’s ability to operate at left-back and contribute in attack has made him an attractive option for leading European clubs. He has impressed during his time in Portugal and is also regarded as a versatile defender with international experience.
Arsenal could view the Sporting player as another quality option on the left side of their defence as Mikel Arteta develops a squad capable of competing across several competitions.
Manchester United are likewise assessing potential defensive reinforcements for future transfer windows. Araújo’s attacking qualities could provide Michael Carrick with additional tactical flexibility, although there is no indication that the club is ready to accelerate its interest.
Sporting demand substantial fee for Maxi Araújo
Sporting would be under no immediate pressure to sell the defender. Araújo previously attracted a valuation of between €45 million and €50 million, while his contract contains an €80 million release clause.
He signed improved terms with the Portuguese club in August, extending his agreement until 2030. That deal has strengthened Sporting’s negotiating position and could make a potential transfer difficult to complete.
Araújo scored seven goals and supplied six assists in 47 appearances last season, highlighting the attacking threat he offers from defence. He has continued to impress this campaign, but Arsenal and Manchester United are not currently preparing a move despite the reported €65 million figures.
