Australia reached 119 for four after 40 overs against South Africa, with Matt Renshaw and Alex Carey resisting the home side’s attack during a patient session.
Renshaw was unbeaten on 16 and Carey on 13 after the pair faced a little over 80 balls between them. Australia made steady progress without taking undue risks.
South African off-spinner Simon Harmer came into the attack after lunch and threatened to break the partnership. He has previously claimed important wickets on tours of India and Pakistan, although Australia were able to score runs from his bowling.
Anrich Nortje continued to run in hard, testing the Australian batsmen with fast, bouncy deliveries. Despite the pressure, Renshaw and Carey held firm as Australia moved to 4-119.
