Matt Renshaw’s monumental 190 has given Australia another memorable Test moment in South Africa, with the touring side’s tail providing valuable support in Durban.
Renshaw’s innings stands out among the unexpected episodes that have become a feature of Australian Test tours of South Africa. His contribution was followed by a determined effort from the lower order as Australia built a formidable position.
The performance adds to a remarkable list of Australian cricketing moments in the country, including Greg Blewett and Steve Waugh batting throughout a day in Johannesburg in 1997, before Mark Waugh produced an unlikely victory in the following Test at what was then Port Elizabeth.
South Africa also lost 16 wickets in a single day in 2002, while Kingsmead produced another extraordinary occasion in 2009 when Phillip Hughes recorded twin centuries.
Renshaw’s 190 can now be added to that roll call, after he saluted the crowd following an innings that carried Australia through a demanding passage with the help of the touring side’s stout-hearted tail.
