A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has issued an arrest warrant for Eduardo Bolsonaro, the brother of presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, weeks before the country’s runoff election.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the warrant on Thursday, as incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva prepares to face Flavio Bolsonaro in the October 25 contest. Flavio is the favourite to win, according to the material provided.
Eduardo Bolsonaro was convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Court in June after being accused of lobbying the United States to interfere in the trial of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

De Moraes said Eduardo Bolsonaro should begin serving his four-year sentence immediately. He also cancelled the former lawmaker’s Brazilian passport and instructed federal police to arrest him if he returns to the country.
“The defendant cannot benefit from his own wrongdoing by fleeing the national territory to an unknown location for the purpose of thwarting the application of criminal law,” de Moraes said in his ruling.
Eduardo Bolsonaro moved to the United States in March 2025, saying he would devote “100 percent” of his energy to securing the release of his father. The move cost him his seat in Brazil’s National Congress and his job as a federal police investigator.
The 42-year-old lives in Texas and holds a green card. He was convicted of lobbying for sanctions against members of the Brazilian government and higher tariffs on Brazilian exports during the trial of Jair Bolsonaro.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has also acted as a link between his brother and the administration of US President Donald Trump, accompanying Flavio Bolsonaro to a meeting at the White House in May.
The warrant comes as Brazil’s deeply polarised political divide faces another major test, with both sides accusing the other of corruption and lawfare. The Bolsonaro family regards de Moraes as a political enemy; he chaired the investigation that led to Jair Bolsonaro being sentenced in September 2025 to 27 years in prison for plotting to stage a coup.
