Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged US President Donald Trump to stop posting memes and “throwing shade” at Canada, as tensions between the two countries continue.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Carney called for a more serious approach to the relationship between Ottawa and Washington. His remarks came amid repeated public criticism from Mr Trump and disputes over trade and Canada’s place in North America.
Mr Trump has previously used social media to mock Canada and has repeatedly suggested that it should become the 51st US state. The comments have drawn a firm response from Mr Carney, who has insisted that Canada is a sovereign country.
The two leaders have held discussions on improving bilateral relations, but their exchanges have continued to be overshadowed by tariff threats and public attacks.
Mr Carney’s appeal represents a call for the dispute to be handled through formal negotiations rather than social media posts and personal jibes.
