A toddler has died after being shot at an apartment complex in South Oak Cliff, Dallas, prompting grief in the community and renewed calls for action over gun violence.
Dallas police were called to Oakwood Place Apartments on Wadsworth Drive at about 1am on Sunday, 11 October, where officers found the child suffering from a gunshot wound inside one of the units.
Officers began lifesaving treatment before paramedics arrived. The toddler was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.
Police have not said who fired the weapon or released details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Child Protective Services was contacted, while the child’s mother was taken in for questioning, according to investigators.
Residents said they were struggling to understand how the child had been killed. Neighbour Bernard William Shabad said the incident was “real sad” and urged adults to pay closer attention to children.
“There’s too much of this going on,” he said, calling for guns to be removed from the community and describing the death as that of “a little baby”.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Dallas police have not announced any arrest or identified a suspect.
