The Detroit Fire Department has launched Fire Prevention Week with a community event focused on fire safety, lithium-ion battery risks and helping residents protect their homes.
The free event was held on Sunday, October 4, at Engine 42 on West Chicago in Detroit, with residents offered hands-on training, live music, food, games and activities for families.
This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower”, highlights the importance of using and charging everyday devices powered by lithium-ion batteries safely.
Firefighters provided practical advice on preventing battery-related fires, alongside fire extinguisher demonstrations, hands-only CPR training and activities involving fire hoses and mobile fire-safety equipment.
Residents were also able to register for free smoke alarm installations in their homes through the Detroit Fire Department.
The department will hold two further open-house events during the week, at Engine 56 on Ryan Road on Wednesday, October 7, and Engine 54 on Trinity Street on Friday, October 9. Both events will include fire-safety information and opportunities to sign up for smoke alarm installations.
Fire officials are urging residents to follow safe charging practices, including using approved chargers, placing devices on hard surfaces while charging and stopping use of batteries that become unusually hot, swollen or damaged.
