Dyson has launched the CameraJet, an electric toothbrush with a built-in camera that uses machine learning to identify gaps between the teeth and direct a cleaning jet into them.
The company describes the device as an “entirely new way to clean your teeth”, combining sonic brushing with an integrated flosser. Its Gap Optical Targeting system is designed to recognise interdental spaces as the brush is moved across the mouth.
Dyson says the camera captures and analyses 28 images a second, allowing the device to detect the position and angle of gaps between teeth. Once a gap is identified, the CameraJet automatically releases a burst of liquid to target the area.
The system uses a 100,000-pixel macro-lens camera and a machine-learning algorithm. Dyson says the technology was developed over six years and trained using hundreds of thousands of dental images.
Rather than using a narrow, needle-like stream, the CameraJet delivers a conical jet of mouth rinse. Dyson claims the wider spray can cover more of the area between teeth while using less pressure.
The toothbrush links to the MyDyson app, where users can view a live image from the camera and receive feedback on their brushing coverage. Dyson says the images are not recorded or stored on the device or in the cloud.
The company has also developed non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouth rinse for use with the system, saying excess foam could obstruct the camera. The device is being sold as part of Dyson’s move into oral care.
Dyson says the CameraJet was developed alongside dental experts and is intended to help prevent plaque building up between teeth by combining brushing and precision flossing in a single device.
