An e-bike rider was struck by a car in Chandler, Arizona, in a collision captured on camera as concern grows over the safety of increasingly fast and powerful electric bicycles.
The footage shows the rider being hit by the vehicle, although details about the person’s injuries and the circumstances leading up to the crash have not been released.
The incident occurred as authorities across the Phoenix metropolitan area warn about unsafe e-bike use. A separate report by Arizona’s Family said a 12-year-old rider was involved in a collision with a car in Chandler on Monday, though it was not immediately clear whether that was the same crash shown in the footage.
Chandler city officials have introduced new rules in response to rising complaints about high-speed e-bikes. The regulations, which took effect on July 11, require riders under 18 to wear helmets and set a minimum age of 16 for Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach speeds of up to 28mph.
Class 3 e-bikes are also prohibited on pavements, shared-use paths and in city parks. Riders using Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes in certain areas face a 15mph speed limit, falling to 5mph when passing pedestrians.
The city has said it had not recorded a high number of e-bike crashes but had received numerous complaints about riders travelling at excessive speed. The new restrictions include a public education campaign aimed at improving safety for riders and other road users.
