A man is in custody after allegedly shooting dead two children, aged four and 10, in Los Angeles’ Pico-Union neighbourhood, police said.
The shooting happened shortly before 1pm on Sunday near the junction of Venice Boulevard and South Catalina Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
Officers found the children and a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The children, identified by police as a four-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, were taken to hospital but later died.
The man, believed to be the children’s father, is thought to have shot them before turning the gun on himself. He was also taken to hospital with what police described as self-inflicted gunshot wounds and remained in custody.
Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public and that no additional suspects were being sought. The man’s condition was not immediately known.
Investigators were working to establish the motive and the circumstances of the attack. Officers also requested footage from a Metro bus which was passing through the area at the time.
