A Florida sheriff’s agent was killed in a head-on crash with a suspected wrong-way driver while responding to a deputy-involved shooting in Brevard County.
Kevin Morris, a senior homicide agent with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, was travelling north on Interstate 95 near Titusville when his vehicle was struck overnight, officials said. The other driver also died.
Investigators said a 2021 Nissan Sentra had made a U-turn near mile marker 223 before entering the northbound carriageway and travelling south in the wrong direction.
The collision happened near mile marker 221, south of State Road 46, after the vehicle entered Mr Morris’s path. Both vehicles caught fire, according to officials.
Emergency crews from the Titusville Police Department and Titusville Fire Department attended the scene, but neither Mr Morris nor the other driver could be saved.
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the crash investigation. The identity of the other driver has not been released.
Mr Morris joined the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office after retiring from the Palm Bay Police Department in 2011. He initially served as a deputy before becoming a senior homicide agent in the sheriff’s Criminal Investigative Services division.
State Representative Mike Haridopolos said Mr Morris had “served with distinction” and offered prayers for his family. Titusville Mayor Andrew Connors also expressed condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of both people killed.
Authorities have not released further details about the deputy-involved shooting that Mr Morris was responding to in northern Brevard County.
