A 14-year-old pupil has shot and wounded a head teacher and a female member of staff with a hunting rifle at a French school near Marseille.
The victims were taken to hospital after the shooting at Joseph Lakanal college in Aubagne, but neither suffered life-threatening injuries, according to mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari.
A school supervisor disarmed the teenager before police arrived. The pupil was later detained.
Mr Squillari said the boy had entered the school carrying the rifle and fired twice in a corridor towards the head teacher and another teacher. The investigation will establish how he obtained the weapon, he added.
French broadcaster BFM TV reported that the rifle had been concealed in a guitar case.
Pupils ran for cover after shots
One student said her maths teacher initially suggested the first bang could have been caused by construction work nearby. After a second shot, an alarm sounded and pupils began leaving their classrooms.
“We were panicking, we ran,” the student said. “There were two ways out: one passage to the sports hall and one passage to go outside. Survival instinct took over and I ran towards the outside.”
There was no immediate indication that the shooting was connected to a three-week wave of protests, some of which have turned violent, at high schools across France. Eddy Sid, a spokesman for the SGP-FO police union, said there was no apparent link between the incident and demonstrations over school staffing and funding.
He added that there had been no blockades at Joseph Lakanal college.
President Emmanuel Macron condemned the wider violence on Monday. His education and interior ministers were due to visit the college later in the day.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the opposition National Rally party and a frontrunner to replace Mr Macron, said the Government was losing control of security in schools.
“Schools, which should be sanctuaries, are now places where people risk their lives. Insecurity has entered the school. Many pupils and teachers go there with a knot in their stomach,” she said.
