George and Amal Clooney arrived in Venice by water taxi on Tuesday, with the actor helping his wife ashore as the 83rd Venice International Film Festival prepared to open.
The couple made their way to the Lido ahead of the festival’s official opening on Wednesday, September 2, when Clooney is due to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
La Biennale di Venezia, which organises the event, announced in July that the honour had been awarded to the American actor, director and producer in recognition of his contribution to cinema. ([labiennale.org](https://www.labiennale.org/en/news/george-clooney-golden-lion-lifetime-achievement))
Clooney is expected to collect the award during the opening ceremony at the Palazzo del Cinema, with Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern scheduled to deliver the laudatory address.
