Glendale Police have released body-camera footage and audio from an hours-long standoff in Arizona that began after a woman called 911 to report seeing her father inside a home despite an order of protection.
The incident unfolded on August 12 near Nicolet Avenue and 75th Avenue. Police identified the man as 59-year-old Jeffrey Peters, who was allegedly seen on the property through a home security camera. His daughter was not at the house when she contacted emergency services.
Officers went to the property and tried to persuade Peters to leave, but he refused and barricaded himself inside. Police said he was known to have access to firearms and protective equipment, including body armour, helmets and gas masks.
The newly released footage shows officers responding to the scene, attempting negotiations and preparing for a tactical operation as the standoff continued. Police said Peters opened fire with a rifle, striking several police vehicles and two drones during the confrontation.
Glendale’s SWAT team was eventually deployed after officers obtained a warrant to enter the property. Authorities said an officer suffered minor injuries during the operation.
When police were able to search the home, Peters was found dead inside. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether he was killed by police or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Avondale Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting as part of the West Valley Critical Incident Response Team. Glendale Police released the body-camera footage and audio on October 21 as part of their account of the incident.
