Charles Duan has been named Sommelier of the Year at The Age Good Food Guide Awards, while Leanne Altmann’s drinks list at a new Spanish-leaning grill has won Drinks List of the Year.
Duan, a former chef, was recognised for his work at Restaurant Gaea in Fitzroy, where his wine list accompanies a tasting menu of more than 18 courses. The judges praised the range and depth of his pairings.
Accepting the award, Duan said he had recently left his role as a sommelier to return to cooking.
“I’ve actually just quit being a somm … I’m focusing back on being a chef. But I am still very stoked with this,” he said, prompting applause.
The Drinks List of the Year went to the Spanish-influenced grill, whose selection was assembled by Trader House drinks specialist Leanne Altmann. The list was described as generous and indulgent, with a strong Basque influence and an emphasis on encouraging diners to stay longer.
Besha Rodell, The Age’s chief restaurant critic and a presenter at the awards, singled out the restaurant’s $45 Marsala Manhattan, saying it was worth ordering.
