Google has restored support for some older Chromecast streamers and Google Home devices after an update to the Google Home app caused problems with setup and limited functionality.
The fix is included in Google Home version 4.26, which is now available for Android through the Google Play Store. The company said the update resolves an issue affecting the ability to set up certain older devices.
Those affected included the original Chromecast, launched in 2013, the second-generation model released in 2015 and the Google Home Mini. Reports of problems emerged in late July, following earlier disruption to first-generation Chromecast support in May.
The latest issue was mainly reported in the Android version of the Google Home app. Users experienced difficulties during setup, while some also found that existing device functions were affected.
In comments posted across several Reddit discussions, Google said: “We’ve resolved an issue that was impacting the ability to set up some older Chromecast and Google Home devices. If you haven’t already, factory reset their speaker or update your Google Home app to version 4.26 and try again…”
Google no longer provides regular software support for the original Chromecast, although the device has continued to work with the company’s wider ecosystem. Owners who are still experiencing problems are advised to update the Google Home app and, where necessary, factory reset the affected speaker or streamer before attempting setup again.
