A police shooting in Gary, Indiana, has left a 67-year-old security guard dead after officers responded to reports of an armed man behaving erratically near a train station.
Kenneth Williams, a Gary resident, was confronted by police at about 11.20pm on Friday, 28 August, following a call to the station at Broadway and 4th Avenue, according to Indiana State Police.
Gary Police Department officers and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies had been sent to the scene shortly before 11pm after reports that the security guard was displaying “unusual and erratic behaviour”. Officers initially attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Authorities said a confrontation later developed and Williams exchanged gunfire with the officers. He was shot and died at the scene.
Six Gary police officers and three Lake County Sheriff’s officers discharged their weapons during the incident, state police said. No officers were injured, and officials said there was no continuing threat to the public.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the dead man as Williams, 67. The cause and manner of his death had not been determined as of Saturday evening.
Indiana State Police are leading the investigation and said the officers who fired their weapons had been placed on administrative leave. Their identities have not been released.
Williams’s family has called for answers about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
