Harry Styles paid tribute to Liam Payne during a concert at Madison Square Garden by performing an unreleased song he wrote in memory of his former One Direction bandmate.
Styles introduced “What Is Enough” during the sold-out show in Midtown Manhattan, which took place on the anniversary of Payne’s death.
Before performing the song, Styles told the audience that two years earlier he had lost “one of my closest friends”. Payne died in October 2024 after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Addressing the crowd, Styles said: “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other.”
He then explained that he had written the song for his friend, saying: “So many people who have touched my life in such special ways. I wouldn’t be here without. I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”
Styles and Payne were members of One Direction alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The Madison Square Garden performance of “What Is Enough” followed Styles’ remarks about Payne and brought the tribute to a close.
