An ICE agent shot a man during an enforcement operation in New York City while a five-year-old child was in the car, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, prompting a call for an investigation into the incident.
Mamdani said early reports indicated agents had surrounded the vehicle in the Marble Hill neighbourhood before firing multiple rounds. The child was believed to be physically unharmed, he said.
The mayor described the shooting as an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation” and said he had spoken to President Donald Trump. He added that he would demand an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city.
“I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” Mamdani said.
ICE shooting in New York under investigation
The Department of Homeland Security said officers were carrying out a “targeted enforcement operation” in the Bronx at about 4pm to arrest a man it identified as a Dominican national with a criminal conviction.
DHS said an officer “discharged his weapon” and that the man was injured. It said the circumstances remained under investigation.
The New York Police Department said the man was conscious and receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
The shooting comes after months of criticism of ICE and other federal immigration operations. The agency has been given a target of one million deportations a year and expanded to more than 22,000 agents by January.
