Chelsea have rejected an initial loan approach from Roma for Jamie Gittens, with the winger now expected to remain at Stamford Bridge despite continued interest from the Italian club.
French reporter Fabrice Hawkins said on Tuesday, September 1, that discussions over a possible move had become increasingly complicated as the transfer deadline approached.
“Jamie Gittens is expected to stay at Chelsea despite interest from AS Roma,” Hawkins posted on X. He added that Chelsea had turned down Roma’s first loan proposal.
The situation had been linked to negotiations involving Roma midfielder Manu Koné, with Sky Sports reporting that Chelsea were exploring a deal that could have seen Gittens move to the Serie A side temporarily. Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini was understood to be opposed to losing Koné, however, creating a further obstacle to the proposed arrangement.

Gittens joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund last summer but endured a difficult first campaign in west London. He made 27 appearances in all competitions, including 12 starts, scoring once and providing five assists.
A hamstring injury restricted his involvement and he did not play for Chelsea after January. The club’s own season review confirmed the extent to which the injury disrupted his progress.
The winger has since returned to fitness and was included in Chelsea’s travelling squad for their pre-season tour. He also started in attack during the club’s friendly against Tottenham.
Competition for places remains intense, with Morgan Rogers among the players competing for a role in Chelsea’s wide and attacking positions. Alejandro Garnacho’s departure has opened up one place in the squad, but regular first-team football may still be difficult for Gittens to secure.
Roma’s interest means the possibility of a late breakthrough cannot be entirely dismissed, but the latest indications are that Gittens will stay with Chelsea once the window closes at 11pm on Tuesday.
