Kenyan authorities have destroyed 1,024kg of methamphetamine seized in the Indian Ocean, with the haul valued at an estimated US$63 million (A$90 million).
The drugs were placed in a high-temperature kiln and destroyed under the supervision of Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, almost a year after the Kenyan navy intercepted them off the coast of Mombasa.
The consignment was seized on October 25, 2025, about 630km from Mombasa. The vessel, which was not flying a flag, was escorted to port under armed guard.
Six Iranian citizens arrested aboard the vessel remain before the courts facing drug-trafficking charges.
Mr Murkomen said Kenya was being used as both a “transit hub” and a “market” for illegal drugs, and warned that authorities would intensify efforts to disrupt the trade.
He said suspected traffickers would be prosecuted and that the Government would seek to seize property linked to drug trafficking.
Authorities described the interception as a major breakthrough as Kenya confronts growing concerns over synthetic drugs, particularly along the coast, where officials have reported increasing problems involving methamphetamine and heroin.
