A private jet carrying US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner has landed in Moscow as the Trump administration begins a fresh attempt to broker an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The arrival on Saturday, September 5, came after Donald Trump said on Friday that the pair were travelling abroad to try to secure a peace agreement.
Witkoff, the US special envoy, and Mr Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, are expected to hold talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow before travelling on to Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the envoys are due to meet him in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday, September 6. He said he would wait to hear what proposals they brought from Washington and what Moscow had to say about them.
Russian state news agency Tass reported that the Kremlin had been informed of the planned visit, although spokesman Dmitry Peskov said details of any meetings would be announced only once they had taken place.
The trip is the latest effort by the Trump administration to revive negotiations after previous discussions over a settlement stalled. The war has continued alongside intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, adding to the pressure surrounding the diplomatic mission.
Mr Witkoff and Mr Kushner have previously travelled to Moscow for talks with Mr Putin. Their latest visit is intended to restart high-level discussions and explore whether the United States can bring Russia and Ukraine closer to an agreement.
