Liverpool have made contact with Pedro Neto’s representatives as they assess a late move for the Chelsea winger, with Cody Gakpo’s possible transfer to Manchester City forcing the club to consider another attacking addition.
Talks between Manchester City and Liverpool over Gakpo are understood to be advancing, although no agreement has been confirmed. City are seeking further options in wide areas after allowing Omar Marmoush and Savio to join Tottenham.
According to Football Transfers, Liverpool will only sanction Gakpo’s departure if they can bring in sufficient attacking cover. Bradley Barcola is already expected to arrive from Paris Saint-Germain, but the club are thought to want another established forward before the transfer window closes.
Liverpool explore Pedro Neto transfer
Neto has emerged as one of the leading options under consideration, with Liverpool contacting the Portugal international’s agent to establish whether a move from Stamford Bridge is possible.
The 26-year-old is reportedly open to a switch if an attractive proposal is made. However, Chelsea are believed to value the winger at close to £100 million and would be reluctant to lose a key attacking player so late in the window.
Chelsea signed Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2024 for a fee understood to be worth about £54 million. The London club would therefore expect a substantial premium before agreeing to his sale.
The winger’s recent form helps explain the valuation. Chelsea’s official review of the 2025-26 campaign recorded 10 goals and 10 assists for Neto in 52 appearances, while he has been used on both flanks and occasionally in a central role.
Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal also showed interest earlier in the summer and reportedly discussed personal terms with the player. That pursuit cooled after the club baulked at Chelsea’s financial demands.
Liverpool’s position has been complicated by the timing of the potential Gakpo exit. Sky Sports reported that Manchester City had opened talks with the Reds, while Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola remained non-committal about the Netherlands forward’s future after Saturday’s draw with Nottingham Forest.
“I’m looking forward to arriving at September 2 and knowing what squad we have,” Iraola said. “Now everything is quite uncertain and it’s the same for every team, but it’s how the competition works.”
With the deadline approaching, Liverpool must now decide whether Neto is worth the sizeable investment required to replace Gakpo, or whether to retain the Dutchman rather than weaken their attacking options at the start of the season.
