Jeremy Jacquet has returned to Liverpool training ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City, providing a significant boost for head coach Andoni Iraola.
The France international was pictured taking part in outdoor group drills at the AXA Training Centre on Thursday. His involvement suggests the hamstring problem which forced him out of France’s 4-1 win over Belgium may be less serious than initially feared.
Jacquet had been left out of France’s matchday squad after the French Football Federation confirmed he had suffered a minor strain to his left hamstring. The injury raised concerns that Liverpool could be without one of their most impressive performers for an extended period.
Jeremy Jacquet’s return strengthens Liverpool’s defence
His apparent recovery offers Iraola greater continuity in central defence as Liverpool prepare to defend their unbeaten domestic record at Anfield.
The 21-year-old has quickly made an impression since arriving at the club during the summer. He has formed an increasingly effective partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk, combining assured possession play and strong positioning with aerial ability and recovery pace.
That understanding has contributed to Liverpool’s defensive solidity during their unbeaten run, although the pairing will face a major test against Manchester City’s attack.
Jacquet’s return is particularly welcome with Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo still major doubts after missing team training. Iraola will hope the defender completes the remaining preparations without suffering any further setback.
While Thursday’s session does not confirm that Jacquet will start on Sunday, his presence in full team training gives Liverpool renewed defensive options before one of the biggest fixtures of their campaign.
