Liverpool have opened club-to-club talks with Genk over a potential transfer for teenage goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans as they assess the future of their goalkeeping department.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday, August 30, that the two clubs were in direct contact regarding a possible move for the highly rated Belgian prospect.
Romano said Liverpool were considering whether to sign Brughmans immediately or agree a deal for him to remain at Genk before joining the Reds in 2027.
Liverpool weigh Brughmans transfer options
The decision could depend on the future of Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is attracting interest from Nottingham Forest before the transfer window closes.
Mamardashvili officially joined Liverpool from Valencia in July 2025, but has remained behind Alisson Becker in the pecking order. He was an unused substitute during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Forest at Anfield on Saturday.
A departure for the Georgian international would leave Liverpool needing another senior goalkeeping option, potentially prompting the club to accelerate their plans for Brughmans.
Brughmans is regarded as one of Belgium’s most promising young goalkeepers and stands around 2 metres tall. Genk have confirmed that he is part of their first-team goalkeeping group, while the club’s official website lists him among their senior squad.
Genk announced earlier this year that Brughmans had extended his contract until June 2028, describing him as one of the country’s brightest goalkeeping talents.
Liverpool must now decide whether the teenager should move to Merseyside as part of an immediate reshaping of the squad or continue his development in Belgium before a planned switch in 2027.
