Liverpool are considering a renewed move for Brighton & Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh ahead of the January transfer window after the forward returned to training following an injury setback.
The Reds pursued the Gambia international during the summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Brighton, who rejected offers below their valuation. Minteh’s fitness concerns also contributed to Liverpool ending their interest.
Liverpool could revive interest in Yankuba Minteh
Liverpool reportedly made bids of £50 million and £60 million before Brighton increased their asking price from £70 million to £80 million towards the close of the transfer window.
Minteh’s representatives have confirmed that he is working towards full fitness, giving Liverpool encouragement that a deal could be revisited in January. The 22-year-old’s return to training will now be assessed alongside his performances once he is back in competitive action.
The winger’s pace, dribbling ability and direct style could provide Liverpool with another option on the right side of their attack, as well as adding width to the team.
Brighton remain in a strong negotiating position
Any renewed approach is likely to prove difficult, with Minteh under contract at Brighton until 2029. The Seagulls therefore remain in a strong position to demand a substantial fee for the player.
Gambian journalist Foday Manneh has suggested that Liverpool could return for Minteh in January, although the winger’s recovery and form after returning to action will be central to the club’s decision.
Liverpool must first determine whether Minteh has regained full fitness before making another formal approach. Even if he returns to his best, Brighton’s valuation is likely to remain the main obstacle to an agreement.
