A new romantic comedy filmed in Scottsdale and featuring about 100 local actors is set to premiere this week, with writer and director Mark Bork using the film to celebrate the Arizona city and raise support for GiGi’s Playhouse.
Underneath the Glittery Moon will be shown at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on October 15 at 7pm, followed by a reception attended by members of the cast and crew.
Bork, who also appears in the film, said the story explores the possibility of finding love later in life. He plays the romantic interest of Meredith, a woman who runs a community theatre and is portrayed by Julie Van Lith.
The film follows several characters whose lives intersect through the fictional theatre. Its makers say Scottsdale is more than a backdrop, with local businesses, venues and residents featuring throughout the production.
Van Lith described the film as an uplifting, family-friendly comedy, while Bork said its central message was one of hope and the belief that a meaningful relationship can begin at any age.
The production also includes Mariah, a local actor with Down syndrome, in the role of a barista. Bork said her character recognises the romantic connection between two customers during a coffee-shop scene.
A painting used in the film is due to be auctioned at the premiere, with proceeds going to GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix. The Scottsdale-based non-profit provides free therapeutic, educational and career-development programmes for people with Down syndrome, their families and the wider community.
The film’s official premiere forms part of a wider effort to showcase local talent and community life, with Bork bringing together actors, crew members and businesses from across Scottsdale for his first feature film.
