A man has been arrested after allegedly entering Western Australian MP Hannah Beazley’s electorate office armed with nunchucks and making threats.
Police were called to the Victoria Park office at about 1.15pm on Wednesday following reports of a man with a weapon. Officers later located and arrested him nearby in Bentley.
The man is assisting police with their inquiries and has not been charged.
Ms Beazley, Western Australia’s Local Government Minister, said her staff had been left shaken but that no one was injured.
“This afternoon, staff within my electorate office were faced with a confronting situation when a member of the public entered the office armed with a weapon,” she said.
“I have spoken to my staff, who are understandably shaken and upset by what took place. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.”
Ms Beazley said her immediate focus was the welfare of her staff and thanked police for their rapid response and support.
“At this time, I do not know the motivation behind what occurred today, and as the matter is now subject of a police investigation I won’t comment further,” she said.
The incident follows an attack on federal MP Helen Haines outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday, when a man allegedly repeatedly struck her with a white Toyota four-wheel-drive.
Western Australian politicians had raised concerns about their safety following that incident.
