A man jumped overboard from the Carnival Panorama while it was sailing off Mexico’s Baja peninsula, prompting the cruise ship to turn around and search for him before continuing towards Long Beach, California.
Carnival Cruise Line said the incident happened on Saturday as the vessel travelled from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Long Beach. The company said: “Carnival Cruise Line confirmed Saturday that a male guest aboard Carnival Panorama jumped overboard while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, California.”
After the man was reported missing, the crew reviewed CCTV footage as part of its investigation and notified the US and Mexican Coast Guards.
A passenger said a family member had asked guest services to page the man at about 10.30am, after searching for him on board.
The passenger said the CCTV review confirmed that he had gone overboard. The ship turned back at about 2pm to search the waters, then resumed its journey to Long Beach at approximately 4.30pm.
Carnival said it was supporting the family who had been travelling with the man, adding: “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones.”
The status of the man was not immediately known. Carnival Cruise Line and the US Coast Guard had been approached for further information.
